Our origins

The hands behind the grains

From bespoke furniture to heirloom puzzles, Michael McIver's journey is a testament to slow craftsmanship.

Michael McIver's journey into puzzle-making began not with cardboard, but with timber. After two decades as a bespoke furniture maker, Michael found himself captivated by the offcuts—the beautiful, irregular pieces of maple, walnut, and cherry that were too small for tables but too precious to discard.

What started as a weekend project to create a wooden jigsaw for his daughter quickly evolved into an obsession. He began studying the Victorian era of puzzle making, where artisans hand-cut intricate "whimsy" pieces shaped like animals, flowers, and everyday objects.

Today, Michael McIver operates out of a sunlit workshop in the Pacific Northwest. Every puzzle is a testament to slow craftsmanship. The images are carefully curated, the wood is sustainably sourced, and the cut patterns are designed to challenge, delight, and endure for generations.
